Bus Tour
Hosted by: Imperial County Environmental Justice Enforcement Taskforce in Collaboration with the Imperial Visions Action Network (IVAN)
Sponsored by: California Department of Toxic Substances Control

Imperial Visions Action Network (IVAN) is a model that demonstrates the power of collaboration with community-driven environmental enforcement entities that are efficient, effective, and transparent in protecting human health and the environment from toxic harm. This concept evolved from a series government-sponsored bus tours that occurred throughout the country over the past ten years. These events brought together state, local, and federal environmental regulators to attend daylong bus tours and workshops conducted by community residents and advocates. Using this model, IVAN implemented a similar series of “Toxic Tour” bus tours in the Imperial Valley. However, rather than simply providing information to participants, the IVAN tours were augmented by the creation and integration of an Imperial Valley Environmental Justice Enforcement Taskforce, which brought enforcement and community leaders together to fill enforcement gaps and produce significant and long-term results.
During the Bus Tour, the Imperial County Environmental Justice Enforcement Taskforce will utilize and integrate the IVAN community-sourcing database technology, which permits community members to make public reports of environmental health hazards, thereby simplifying the reporting and hazard-identification process while also increasing transparency. Unique to this taskforce model is an environmental ‘problem solver’ assigned from a government enforcement agency. The environmental problem solver works with communities and government in relaying reports appropriately and developing strategies and action plans for addressing environmental harms identified and prioritized by the community.
